      Pipe Fittings

A pipe fittings is defined as a part, used in piping system to change direction or function, which is mechanically joined to the system. Probably the simplest way to achieve this end would be to bend the pipe in the direction required, but this process will stretch and thin the outer wall whilst thickening and wrinkling the inner wall. This results in flow resistance and accelerated wall erosion.

A second method sometimes used is a mitred joint. Where pipe are cut to the correct angle and welded together to achieve the desired change. Whist the cross-section area and wall thickness are maintained a great deal of efficiency is lost due to friction and turbulence resulting from the severe changes is direction; for example a single-mitred bend offers about six times the resistance of a swept elbow.

For these reasons swept fittings are preferred on most piping systems, particularly where internal pressure, flow and corrosion are major considerations.

Butttweld Fitting

A piping system using Butt welding Fittings has many inherent advantages over other forms.

  • Welding a fitting to the pipe means that is permanently leakproof.
  • The continuous metal structure formed between pipe and fitting adds strength to the system.
  • Smooth inner surface and gradual directional changes reduce pressure losses, turbulence and minimises the action of corrosion and erosion.
  • A welded system utilises a minimum of space.

Seamless butt welding fittings are produced from seamless tube and pipe by either a hot or cold forming process. Seamless butt welding fittings are available in standard sizes, as published in the relevant product tables, and in non-standard sizes. Standard size fittings are generally ex stock.

Seam-welded buttwelding fittings

Seam-welded butt welding fittings are produced from hotrolled, annealed and pickled sheet or plate, formed into half shells or segments and longitudinally seam-welded. Seam-welded butt welding fittings are available in standard sizes, as published in the relevant product tables, and in non-standard sizes. Standard size fittings are generally ex stock.

Welding is carried out by Codequalified personnel (ASME Bailer and Pressure Boiler Vessel Code, Section 9; Lloyds Register of Shipping; TÜV and others) whose qualifications are reguarly checked and approved. Established welding methods include automatic plasma arc, automatic. TIG, pulsed TIG, MIG and shielded-electrode techniques.

Terms of supply

Unless otherwise agreed, seamless butt welding fittings are supplied according to technical delivery condition DIN 86086. Seamwelded butt welding are supplied in the as-welded condition.

End preparation

Square cut and deburred, alternatively: bevelled as specified.

All butt welding fittings are marked with alloy name, outside diameter, wall thickness and heat number. Additional information like standard and alloy numbers can be added on request.
